I discovered to my dismay that if the bonnet is raised while the wipers are in their "flipped out" position the front windscreen cracks, the edge of the bonnet catches the middle wiper putting pressure in the wiper shaft through the bulkhead, the corresponding bending of the bulkhead "crimps" the bottom of the windscreen and breaks it, the total cost of replacement $1650, fortunately BMW insurance allows a free windscreen so I am not out of pocket.
