Watched a bit of Denton tonight. Heard his interview with Stuart Appleby. Quick Google found this.

Nearly two years ago, in December 2006 an Australian had just begun transforming a previous generation BMW M5 sedan (E39) into the ultimate V8-powered Ute. Now the proud owner, golfer Stuart Appleby from New South Wales, announced that the BMW M5 Ute project has finally been completed. -While the vehicle has yet to be dyno-tested, the builders are saying that the M5’s tuned 4.9-liter V8 could make as much as 460 HP. Even though the conversion of an M5 into a Ute will certainly seem like sacrilege to many, it is a very well executed one.

BMW M5 UTE OWNER Stuart Appleby : "I grew up in Australia for my first 20 years of my life and the "ute" had always been an Aussie icon to a boy from the bush, a way of life for many Australians. I've been lucky enough to have owned in the US one of the best sedans the automotive industry has ever produced in the BMW E39 M5.

I wanted to create a special combination of a cross over M5 ute concept not long after I purchased my M5 in Florida in 2000. This ute idea came to me many years ago when I looked at a picture I took of my M5 and thought that it would make a great ute....what was I thinking?

Years pass by, and I decide I needed to follow through with this concept a bit more. Five years pass and I find a very suitable donor car from a friend in Queensland that probably had the finest 2003 M5 in Australia. He was happy to have his pride and joy "chopped up" for an undertaking of this magnitude. The car had many mods that I was going to put on a lesser car but he had done all the hard yards for me.

Trying to find a shop that had the skills for this sort of work was going to be difficult and time consuming, but in a flash I bumped in to Shane from Southern Rod and Custom in southern New South Wales Australia. His reputation in the hot rod game is held very highly. A quick visit to his work shop that was only one hour from my home as a boy. I could see in the 3 hours I spent with him that he was very capable to create my vision. Ryan from Stylemasters created the sketches you see here, that look great. The time line for a job like this is about 9 - 12 months. I'm looking forward to watching this world first get started and one day a finished product"

World First! Stuart Appleby unveiling M5 Ute at the Deni Ute Muster
Deni - Play on the Plains Festival organisers are thrilled to announce that Stuart Appleby will unveil his recently custom built M5 Ute at the Deni Ute Muster on Friday 3rd October.

This will be a first ever in the world and aptly Stuart thought why not unveil it at the Ute Capital of the World - during the Deni Ute Muster!

A country boy, Stuart Appleby grew up on a small dairy farm near Cohuna, Victoria. During that time the iconic Aussie ‘ute' was a part of his life and a vital ‘workhorse' for the farm.

Since becoming a golfing professional, Stuart has won eight times on the US PGA Tour. He was a member of the International Team in the Presidents Cup four times, and has featured in the top ten of the Official World Golf Rankings.

Another passion for Stuart has been cars. In particular he is an avid BMW fan and in recent years has favoured the M5 model.

Stuart is ready to get amongst it at the Festival.

"I'm looking forward to being at my first "Muster" for sure.

"Being that I've actually brought a locally made product and live just down the road is even more reason to be at the 08 Ute Muster.

"I'm sure I'll meet many other crazy "ute fans" over the two day event, and can't wait to be at the biggest outback auto show on earth", said Stuart.

The actual concept of Stuart wanting to convert an M5 sedan in to a ute has been a dream for quite a number of years. Even Stuart admits it's a bit "out of left field" and has caused mixed reactions with some car enthusiasts.

One day Stuart was looking at a BMW M5 and thought it could look good as a ute. This thought planted the seed for this massive undertaking.

In 2006 Stuart bought a BMW M5 and engaged Shane Rowe, owner of Southern Rod and Custom, based in Deniliquin to take on this massive project.

Southern Rod and Custom is renowned worldwide in the auto industry for being the only builders that manufactures an all steel body, does design work and custom metal fabrication, and builds a "turn-key" car all "in house".

Two years and a number of major hurdles down the track the M5 ute is nearly complete and Stuarts' dream will become a reality.

It will join over 6,000 other utes at the 10th Birthday celebrations of the Deni World Record Ute Muster on Friday 3 & Saturday 4 October.

The Ute will be on show for all to see in the Coates Show and Shine Arena throughout the 2 days. Stuart will also be there to chat to ute enthusiasts about his dream project.

Hi everyone,

Southern BM has been involved with this build for a few years now, have a look the links page on the m5 ute website :D We have sold him the rear muffler for it and helped out where possible with the build. I saw the car going up South Road last Saturday week, looks great. The Ute went around Phillip Island recently to help tune the suspension and it went really well. A few more little things and it will be up to standard. I have heaps of photos on email as we speak regularly. The construction of the carbon fibre ute is unbelievable to see in stages.
