10 of us will be doing the allocated 10 car display, sussing out the event and putting some preplanning into a properly organised much bigger Phillip Island Classic event for next year.
This is a huge event, worth doing as a "not to be missed family event" but it needs heaps of time from a team of people and a lead up to justify it all.
So you will all hear about the concept at the next monthly meeting provided the committee approves the final concept.
People and members I've been speaking to about the "Celebration of Excellence" idea are so far very enthusiastic. All we need now is some fuel in the tank. I'm not a serious show N shine person, it's all about fun and social for me, but I'm getting excited about the "celebration" concept as it is evolving.

Hoping to have some good news there for you all soon.

What an awesome event! Some were very understandably concerned about the weather effects of taking a long trip to Phillip Island. Should a risk be taken on the hard work and $$$$ spent on getting the machinery up to show standard? Forecasts of 40 knot gales, hail and severe thunderstorms at Phillip Island made the wary tremble.
Well, we had an early meet point in FTG and then made a breakfast stop in San Remo. Coffee and Bacon and Egg muffins (without the Mc) went down well and then we all moved off to the Circuit.
So far, despite gloomy clouds threatening, we did not need the wipers at all.
After a day at Haunted Hills on Saturday where I got really cold and wet through while Flagmarshalling (I'm an idiot, did not bring the right gear) I did not even notice the light sprinkle in the late morning. Yeeeessssss!!!!!!!!!

Our cars did sparkle and looked awesome till well after lunchtime. Our allocated area was full up and there was a lot of interest. We had a 2002, an E30 JPS, My C2 2.5 Alpina, E36 M3, E36 320i, E30M3 Evo, E30 racer, E34 535i.

What a fantastic event. COE plans next year will be well advertised and this will be "a not to be missed" on your calendar. Bill Cutler in his first event in the Warsteiner E30 M3, David Towe's E30 JPS, and another Warsteiner E30 driven by Glenn Seton had us whooping and jumping at the start of the straight. What an incredible sight and we were pumped.
The morning race was a complete Bavarian Blitzkreig!!!! Seton 1, Towe 2, Cutler 3, against V8 Walkinshaw Commos, Toranas including L34's and A9x's, Goss's old Jag XJS, A 6 series JPS (now owned by Adrian Brady previously David Towe and is actually the car that won the ATCC in 1985 and won all 9 races in the 1985 Amscar series held at Amaroo Park in those days), Mustang GT HO 5 litre, and a whole lot of other Group A and Group C racers.

I asked a favour of my contacts amongst the race officials if they would allow us a tour of the race control tower. We were treated very kindly there.
What a treat we experienced. A replica Mustang WWII vintage aircraft did aerobatics above us at 1300 hrs and we then took the tour of the Stewards hearing room, Timekeeping and Race Control.

After that we all set off as a BMWCCV group to the Seton garage to have a look at the Warsteiner that had our pulses racing earlier. Glenn Seton had a real smile on his dial during our invasion of his space.
Be sure to be at the Next monthly for a NED's session. I video taped an interview with Glenn.
We then moved on to the garages where Bill Cutler was sharing his Warsteiner space with David Towe, Nick Rahimtulla, Walter Epple and Adrian Brady ('84 635 csi JPS impeccably restored and gleaming Schwarz even inside the garage) and their JPS machinery. Plenty of time spent there by all of us. You could not help but be distracted by the range and quality of machinery throughout the pits and on display. This is a 3 day event and you could not take it all in in a week.
Most went home as the weather began to close in but Scotty Muir, son Chris and I, did not care about getting wet waiting for the last Group A/ Group C race. We just could not get enough of rubbing it in the face of the old V8's.
Glen Seton did not make the grid for some reason but it did not matter as we were again treated to some awesome neck a neck racing. Towe 1, Cutler 3rd after a bad start in the wet conditions from 3rd on the grid to 5th on turn 1 then fought back to at times running 2nd but the Nissan driven by Markland had the nudge in the grunt department.
This was Billy Cutler's shakedown event though, so we will see much more fabulous stuff from him I'm sure.
For me...thanks everyone for your great company as always and it was truly a pleasure not having to work for a change and being able to share time with you all.
Will put up more pics later but here's one of that smiling face after a V8 driver finds out what it is like to drive a great Warsteiner BMW!!!

there are some good quality pics here

A magic day with great company. Threatening weather did not dampen our spirits. Perfectly postioned to see those e30 M3s sliding around the entrance to the front straight and screaming down the straight....oh yeh.....!!
Up the tower to get a rundown from the chief marshalls, absorb the atmosphere in the timekeepers quarters and soak up racing history and beautiful machinery in the pits.
Glen Seaton's gracious responses to our in-depth questions such as ..."what's it like Glen....?", NED's video of Glen's overview of the M3.....
Similar welcoming by Bill Cutler and other racers...
First class day with good company...
Well done guys, well done NED.
I enjoyed the drive down, especially when all lights went out in pitch black (and came back on some time later when I went over a bump)and then when my wipers failed driving home in a downpour...ah...sheer driving pleasure....!!
I love my 02!
cheers

Thanks Ned for the invitation to the P I classic an event i'd never attended before.Apart from the weather it was great day spent with other members and an even better insight into the amount of people who love and enjoy classic/ modern vehicles. The freedom of where you could walk about the pit area and workshops and take photo's was a terrific experience. It was great for me personally to see the JPS M3's with Jim Richards name still adorning the cars which is where the passion for me started whilst being raced in the touring cars many years ago.
Thanks again for the day
Stephen

Hope you all had a good time and a shame about the weather.

The Philip Island Classic from a girl’s point of view:
:bis:
Getting up early was the hardest part, but the breakfast made up for it. It was impossible to look glamorous in the high winds (both for me and the M3, but the car seemed to hold up better) so eventually I just gave up and concentrated on the cars. At least the rain held off for most of the day! We had to do a spot clean on the M3 and it was lovely that everyone pulled together to find just the right product to clean a stain we collected on the paintwork that morning. Thanks Guys. There was so much to see, and Jimmy gave a very helpful commentary on most of it due to his detailed knowledge of cars. Knowing the history and quirks about cars (and having owned many of them at one time or another!!) really makes the tour of the circuit a lot more interesting and I found it easy to become absorbed.

The trip up the tower gave us an insight into what goes into an event like this and we appreciated the time we got to spend up there (thanks Ned). Whilst there, we witnessed a car spinning down the track at close range, which was quite exciting, though probably not for the driver! We met Glen Seeton, and a number of other icons of motorsport (lost on me as they don’t make shoes), then had a tour of the garages which was great. The racing was exciting, especially for a first timer. I learnt a lot and Jimmy found plenty to keep him interested. We both enjoyed the day. Let’s hope the weather will be better for the next one. And Bill Cutler's earlier bavarian racing machine.

What a great day, the weather was somewhat of a challenge but for the better part of the day it was just windy, cold & overcast as opposed to last year when it was just plain stinking hot... So much for global warming LOL.

I'd say a lot of people gave the even a miss based on the weather & that was a mistake as it was still a great day with some very competitive racing under some interesting conditions at times going from a dry track to teeming with rain & cars aquaplaning down the straight. It was amazing there was no real carnage.

For me the day began & ended with the magnificently restored JPS 635 I think I must have hovered around it for a good 40 minutes the detail work was just incredible & I spoke at length with the owner driver for a while regarding the challenges of the restoration.

There was a great turnout from most clubs despite the weather although there were a few cars absent due to the weather but plenty of eye candy just the same.
