This unique car one of eight in Australia and was not imported by BMW Australia. This one is a private import from Hong Kong in 1998. The vehicle was delivered in Johannesburg in South Africa, and then spent a small part of its life in the UK, before being taken to Hong Kong and then Australia.
It was built at the BMW M plant in Rosslyn South Africa in July 1985 from a CKD kit supplied from the BMW M Division in Germany. Only 192 examples were built with the up rated Automatic Transmission: This is the 127th car in the production run, authenticated by the chassis numbers etched on the strut towers … 90127 … with production numbers from 90001 to 90192. 17 Examples were also made in a manual transmission with production numbers from 99001 to 99017.
90001 was the prototype built in late 1983. 90002 was built for Dr Hasselkus (then BMW SA MD), and 90003 went to Piet Badenhorst, then MD & Chief Executive of one of the largest SA banking groups United Bank, and was registered on 18/05/1984.
The initiative behind this model was that BMW SA were unsatisfied they could not have the 745i turbo for the right hand drive market. This was because of packaging restrictions caused by the addition of the turbocharger, this engine could not be fitted to right-hand drive cars. So they developed the M745i with Paul Rosche who headed BMW's Motorsport division at the time.
A total of 209 E23 M7s were built for all markets, only in right hand drive and some were delivered to the UK & Japan. All vehicles were hand build by special order.

Nice bit of history Josh and an interesting story, thanks for sharing! Did you want me to moderate this thread and merge it with your pictures so its all in one place? I have already merged your 2 different picture threads for convenience.

Hi Marc,
Thankyou for that! If you could merge it all that would be fantastic & much appreciated. Given the file sizes with the pictures I had to upload it on separate threads.

I think it is great to have information about such an unusual car - even knowing who some of the other owners were of other examples.
Do you have any interior pictures? I love seeing interior shots.

The White M7 is another one I was driving for 8 months back in 2003 whilst I was having my paint job done! It is owned by a friend of mine.
