plug your chassis number last 7 digits in on this site and it will tell you your BMW original specifications.
www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi
There must be better ways or sites to check as well, but I don't know them.
Does anyone know where there is better info?

Hey Ned that site didn't work at all for me :(
Has everyone seen RealOEM.com (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/)

Yeah RealOEM.com gives part #'s but at least it works.
It'd be good if that BMW VIN Decoder site was actually working or is it just me?

works fine, did right click, open in new window just now? did you copy it or try to transscribe?

The site opens up ok but when I input my chassis code I get an error message.
Have you tried it?

that message comes up with wrong chassis number plugged in.
yours would be very recent. Maybe the last update on the site is not up to the minute? Other members could try say 1 year manuf. back and see what happens? site may also have a note somwhere on update?

The Chassis Number site worked okay for my two cars.
They were manufactured in 2003 and 1998 and it gave model, body type, production date, engine, transmission, steering and catalyzer details as well as fluid quantities for engine oil, transmission oil, rear axle oil, coolant and brake fluid.
Regards,
Tony Whelan.

Worked for my car as well, an 81 E21, however, very limited information. RealOEM provided slightly more info for my VIN.

The 318i and 328i check out fine :)
The 328i was built sometime in April 96 and was first registered in late June, takes them quite a while to send out a car!
