View Full Version : So what M is everyone driving?

So what M car does everyone visiting this section have?

I'm currently driving an E60 M5 and previoulsy had an E46 M3 Convertible.

I definetly miss the convertible and the look of the E46 but the M5 has this crazy straight line speed that I haven't felt in too many other big sedans. Before you know it you're going 220km (by comparrison in the same amount of time my M3 would have been at 160km). I'm toying with the idea of a an E92 M3 convertible, although its fast, it doesn't compare to the M5. Considering its a whopping 75KG heavier than the M5 and 100 horsepower down, it kind of makes sense!

Would love to hear from all the M owners around, no matter what era!

I love those red seats! Did you pick 18's because you were going to track it lots? Very neat looking example, love the nose warmer too (car bra), hehe.

I refuse to buy a car that is that big yet has less rear seat room than a 1 series, sooooo stupid. Otherwise you're right, I would have been there :D. I'm kinda glad i'm not though, the depreciation is bad enough on an M5 (and worse on an M6).

Hey I.M.H.O. the M6 is being amazingly generous, just remember some of us ain't got no back seat at all!

What's a young guy like you need all that back seat room for anyways....;)

B.T.W. I've spotted some awesome deals going for used M6's with stupidly low km's.

I have lots of friends who don't drive themselves, makes me the chaeffuer! So yes I need rear seats that are practicle. If I want something stupid and impracticle, i'll borrow dads car :)

Pretty sure the forum will do that all for you, I know it did for me. Turned my 4 meg image into a web image, didn't take too long at all and I just attached it as normal. Give it a go ;).

Maybe best to just resize first to cut bandwidth and upload speed. Com On Man, do it!

Guys, I've found a couple of shots of my M cars ... I take the E30 to most of the club events, my E60 is a daily driver, the E28 is for weekends ... does an E28M535i count as a proper M car ? [Recently sold my E39, but had a pic so included it anyway ! No I don't know why I sold it either...].

My signature shows I'm a fan of old ///M cars
the E24 is my baby
99 101
The refurb of the M6 was extensive, but IMHO the final result was worth it - the photos are here
http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=46310&l=2e58b&id=737464388

The E34 was a daily driver that I've promised my wife I'll sell (not trying real hard...)
102 103

And the E12 was a lucky find at a killer price.
104
Unfortunately I've spent a fortune bringing the E12 back to great running condition, only to discover it's a terrible track car. So it will probably be sold in the near future to fund a decent track car

Thanks Garry, what a fantastic series of shots of the M6. Was great to see the steps of how such restoration work happens, I don't even want to think how many hours you spent on that car. Well done, it is beautiful!

A couple of shots of my latest toy - Ex-Andrew Gordon and Graeme Bell 1994 Avus Blue 3ltr 5 speed manual M3. Mods are bigger brakes from the 3.2ltr M3 braided brake lines, oil surge protector, Angel eye headlights and clear foglights. Needed a lot of TLC to get the car back to Andrew Gordon condition, but loving every minute of ownership. Great car to drive, can fit the golf clubs in the boot and accomodate all the family. Perfect!!

Look forward to seeing lots of other loved Ms at the SnS.

Hi Kevin, Great to see you on here with your first post! Love the E92. Did you go manual or M-DCT? I've also been curious as to how much more leather 'extended' leather gives you. On the M5 everything is leather including a suede roof lining and leather dash but I heard the M3 isn't that extended, any chance of some detail interior pics?

Hi Marc... I went with the DCT... Awesome gear box... And heaps better than the SMG. As for the extended leather, I agree is not as extended... It covers the arm rests on the centre and the doors... Haven't got photos... Probably won't show the difference as my interior is black! Cheers... Kevin.

Hey Kevin, heard good reports on the DCT boxes from the GTR thru to the M3.
What is it like at mundane tasks, parking, reversing, 3-point turns etc? Is clutch slip a problem at low speeds, I mean is the clutch going to last 20K?
Cheers, Rick

I can't speak for Kevin who drives it everyday but when I had one for a couple of days I found the DCT fantastic, much smoother than both SMGII and SMGIII. Wear and tear would be interesting, my SMGII was barely worn at 50,000km in my M3 but my SMGIII in my M5 is not far off gone (only 34,000KM but a much more powerful car). Just remember with DCT you are replacing TWO clutches when they wear!

the paddle shift in Maserati's is particularly clunky and rubbish when parking and clutches last 20 - 40K max!

Don't talk to me about maserati's in general, I can't speak about the new Gran Turismo (which I have to say is one of the best looking cars on the market, just stunning) but after having a 4200 convertible in the family, I think that was the most poorly put together and engineered car I had ever driven, the thing didn't drive straight. And the paddle shift, not only as you say did it slip all the time and make it impossible to park but yep 18,000km after being driven like a Grandma's car, the thrust bearing was going. Clutch still had some life in it but they said that ferrari/maser supply them together so you can't buy one without the other, what crap! So that car got the flick. Test drove the Quattroporte before I bought the M5, although I have had my share of 'issues' with the M5, I still think I made the right decision. The only thing maser's have going for them is the sound of the engine, it really is fantastic, one of the best sounding V8's. I guess I should reserve judgement about the entire brand until I drive the new one...

Hi Rick,
The DCT's great... Works well in city traffic and all the mundane tasks.
Don't know about wear though... Got to wait and see.

Hi Marc,
Thank goodness you asked me about the extended leather... Just confirmed I don't have it my car!
Just started a new thread about it.
I was initially told what I had was extended but this is not the case! The extended leather is on the centre console and the undersides of the front passenger and driver's console.

Cheers... Kevin.

The only M car I drive is in my dreams :D (at the moment). I'm a fan of the older cars, like the M635. The M535 looks good, and if could find a good one, then I would grab it (even though it the best case of badge engineering I've seen, just like the 3 series JPS cars).

I have recently acquired a 2003 E46 M3 SMG - with full Milltek exhaust & cats + CDA air box...it was in for a tune and re-flash at Peter Fitzgerald recently and only managed an extra 10kw atw...it was a 32deg day tho. Im still not sure about the SMG and would probably prefer a manual but you cant be too choosy on the second hand market!

Nice!
Heat doesn't help any cars, and dynos are especially nasty for heatsoak too!
Mods on M cars often give only small hp gains.
6hp here, 10hp there etc.
Best make sure it's running well, service parts are fresh and you can drive it around corners well.

That's common. There is hardly any extra power to extract from the S54B32. Not worth the warranty hassles and reliability problems. 252kw is about it, but from 3.2l that is so amazing by any standards and in a M3 or even lighter Z4 with sub 5.0 sec 0-100km/h times it make is very tough to beat on the street especially when run with R compound tires I heard.... :D
